Using adhesive Vynyl to cover glider wings

by Andy Schafer

You can use self adhesive vynyl to cover your models wings instead of the normal Profilm / Ultracoat etc. Don't expect a glass like finish, as there are very slight imperfections, but it is pretty good and slightly thicker than the usual covering materials. The vynyl can be bought from any sign writers shop in your local area where they will charge approximately £4.00 per mtr 2ft wide and is easily applied.

Just peel two or three inches of the backing off at one end, make sure you have the sheet straight then tack (press gently) the end down. If you are still sure it's straight then simply pull a few more inches of the backing off, rub it down with your other hand, then peel a bit more back etc etc.

Corners are great, just warm it a little with a hair dryer (NOT a heat gun) and the vinyl will go soft and you can pull it round compound curves easily. If you find that any of the edges lift a tiny bit, just seal them with a sealing iron on a cool setting.

Here below is an example of Andy's covering tip
