This article is for local interest

Palaeontologists from around the globe are scheduled to descend on the City of Winchester any day now. This unprecedented gathering of minds is due to the extraordinary fossilised rock that was recently discovered beneath a residential garden in Winchester. The sample has so far puzzled academics due to its unusual configuration.

The fossilised artefact clearly contains what appears to be the mineralised remains of a fern or leaf commonly associated with the Devonian period, a part of the Paleozoic era some 400Million years ago. Radiometric dating tests performed at The University of Southampton are expected to confirm this.

Alongside the leaf is an impression of a second object that is the cause of intense speculation and puzzlement within the scientific community. By virtue of its proximity to the leaf and its integrity with the rock sample, it is clearly from the same period.

The unsuspecting Winchester resident whose property is at the centre of investigations declined to comment to reporters and wishes to maintain his anonymity. This newspaper can exclusively reveal however that the gentleman is known to have been involved in the transmission of erratic radio commands of some form or other and may be known locally as Wocky (or similar) ..??

F-16 v Raptor

Click to watch video

Amazing 45 second sequence. You may have to Re-play to see the bird that entered the engine. Go to large screen if you can. This is footage from the cockpit of an F-16. Cool reaction and professionalism of the two pilots, including cockpit transmission with video.

F-16 engine ingests bird after takeoff @ Tyndall AFB. Think you might find it interesting to see a crash from the cockpit of an airplane.

It is an instructor pilot in the rear and a student in the front seat of an F-16. A "Bird Strike," as seen through the Heads Up Display (HUD).
You can see the bird flash by just prior to impacting the engine. You can hear the aircraft voice warning system telling them the y have a problem and referring to the "D-6 NL" which means there is no engine RPM.

They made 2 attempts to relight the jet engine, but evidently there was too much damage from the bird strike and they had to eject.

These guys were very cool; note the heavy breathing... They certainly flew Longer than one would expect before ejecting. Airspeed can be observed on the HUD's upper left corner. It goes down to the low 120's as &nbs p;they Struggle to get the engine going again, but as the plane noses over and dives to earth it increases to at least 175 just before impact.

It just goes to show how quickly your day can go to pieces - 45 seconds f rom strike to ejection. All and all, not bad. They ran the Emergency Checklist, made two relight attempts, and picked out a plowed field for impact before ejecting..

You can follow the audio attached to it and hear the conversation between the pilot and instructor pilot and then the tower. Including the p pilot saying they were punching out. The tower didn't seem to completely understand it all, and missed the significance of the last transmission. The towers last radio call, he's talking to an empty aircraft.

The video continues until impact, even after they both eject. A classic "buying the farm" as you can see the plow rows get bigger. A real nice job from the aircrew by keeping their cool and turning the aircraft away from populated areas. No one hurt and no one killed but the dirty bird did cost the Taxpayers a "few" million dollars!

Helios Maidens

Steve Fraquet is the first to fly his new seasons model. He has chosen a unusual subject, the Helios with a very marked gull-wing. The Berlin Helios has a 4 metre wingspan which equates to 1:3.5 scale (original was 14 metres) and the A U W is a mere 8.5 lbs. Rib section is a modified Gottingen 549 at root and knuckle and 682 at the tip. See a short video clip of the maiden flight below or click here for larger version

Accident Report

This accident report on a fatality at the Junior World Gliding Championships in 2005 has just been released by the AIB and makes for most interesting reading. Although the pilot is held somewhat ressponsible, I am concerned about the stupidty of some people to stand on short finals to a runway.

More and Moa

From Ray Cooper comes this interesting link to several pages of detailed photos of the Japanes owned (the Mr Honda) Minimoa. This is a nice alternative colour scheme to the popular Swiss example. As Minimoas seem to be in vogue, here are a couple more rare alternative schemes of a Lithuanian example. (click to enlarge)

Raptor v the 'Line'

News is a bit short at the moment, so here is another non glider topic which will bring a smile to your face.

The story is about how the Americans most advanced fighter was felled by an unseen, non existent force. Spooky!

In future you may take more notice of what is drawn on a map - or else!
