Newcastle & Rotherham - any near by slopes?

Post by mjcp »

I'm off to some glamorous work assignments in a couple of weeks... are there any slopes near-by worth taking a glider for?

cheers in advance!

6 days, 50 views and no posts...

So that would be a NO then...

I guess it makes packing easier and I can take the train instead!

Hi mjcp,

Sorry I didn't reply because Newcastle and Rotherham are 128 miles apart, an enormous area including several National Parks. If you narrow it down a bit you may get more replies.

Ok, I'll try...

I'm going to Newcastle. Then a day or two later I'm going to Rotherham. Not stopping for any usable length of time in between... I live "doon sooth" so have no local knowledge.

So, any hills *near* either that it's worth taking a glide with me for or is it an hour+ drive (plus walk) to anywhere flyable and so, probably not worth the effort for an "after work fly"?

Cheers,

Marc

Hi Marc,

From Newcastle it's about 45 mins to Stanhope, surrounded by a number of good sites covering most wind directions, and overseen by the Weardale Model Gliding Assoc. Benefit is you can mostly fly from near your car. I think Euan Galloway is a WMGA member and may be able to advise.

Feeling more adventurous and got an OS map? 45 min North of Newcastle gets you to Rothbury in the heart of Northumberland where there are several big slopes if you're prepared for a little hike + the wind is in the right direction (Simonside does a Northerly). Probably needs a half day to find, get to and fly a slope here.

From Rotherham you can reach much of the Peak District in 45 mins including Stanage Edge. Again, a club had arranged access to several sites when I flew there 20 years ago - sorry not sure of situation now. Maybe try contacting members via BMFA?

In between Newc and Roth is the North Yorks Moors but a bit off your itinerary.

Hope this helps Marc. Anyway, gotta be better than Windsor for slopes :D (I lived there once).

Cheers,
Rog

Thanks JR... just what I was after... a bit more than a map with a pin in it... (I've had some misses going on the strength of a pin and no reviews!)

cheers!

Thanks for the updates all, looks like it might be a 2 day/1night dash at the end of next week - not much time to explore if it goes that way :-(

Cheers,

Marc.

Up at callow bank this afternoon, just passing nearby so decided to stop and write this.
Fence posts still dotted about and the ruddy long fence is still there
It feels so empty to be here looking at this once magnificent flying site 😥
Used to love being here on a sat/Sun with J.V. Mark F, Steve B and a fair few others

Old post, back from the dead!

I've now moved on from that contract to a little car company near Guildford so wont be travelling for a while (though they have a new unit in Sheffield ... so who knows!)

Lets hope it helps someone else though!
