Lateral balance

Post by Elliot Howells »

Does anyone have an easy method for this?

I’m going to set up the Vanessa rig but just wandered if there’s a better way?

Cheers, Ell.

Morning El.

I know it's not going to help you this time but you might want to give some thought to something like this:

So easy and cheap to build and you only do it once, of course. Just lift it out of the corner of your workshop, plop it on the floor and it's ready to go. Very accurate but the you will be fine tuning the final CG position after the initial flights anyway.

At the risk of being drummed out of the forum, I’ll confess to never having done a lateral balance check! I do take care to cut all matching wing parts from the same sheet and my sheet balsa is all sorted by weight. At the end of the build I weigh the separate wings before and after covering and have never found a discrepancy worth worrying about.

Hey fellas, thanks for the input.

I just rigged up my 4m Discus in the vanessa rig (why vanessa? Only the lord knows)... So, as the c of g is pretty much smack on, my intention was to see where the plumb bob sat laterally - didn't need to. With the sling round the fuz, fore and aft of the wing, the model with it's much repaired starboard wing was dropping to port quite dramatically, so some lead footling got her to sit stable and in balance, cast the lead, cut a hole and set it in with epoxy - I wish I'd taken pics, it was so quick and easy.

Ah yes, I can see that balancing would be necessary after repairs.

The repaired (right) wing was lighter??, plane tilting to Left??

Port and starboard is for shipping. (Sorry Spike)

you're right, it was dropping to port, both wings have been repaired, the right one more so... :)

still confused:- The right (Starboard) one more so, therefore heavier??
Just to be sure. Your right hand is the one with your thumb on the left, and your left hand has the thumb on the right.
Maybe you were looking from the front.

dunna worry Barry, it's all sorted, left wing (port) too light, added lead.

Hope that makes sense now :)
