Nice bit of woodwork there, Brian.

How have you held the tailplane halves on?

Thanks for the nice comments guys.
Robbie - I manufactured a couple of flat carbon joiners and these are set between the tailplane spars. There is also a steel incidence peg in the tailplane. The carbon joiner slots into a plywood former in the fuselage. The former is constructed with layers of 1/8 ply with "joiner shaped" slots in the two central layers. These slots were cut at 90 degrees to each other. (The Gypsy is unusual as most V-tailers have 100 or 110 degree separation) A jig was used (thanks Iain the "Skyman") to set up the correct angles when mounting the former in the fuselage crutch.

Hi Iain. I made a mould out of a 1/16 ply backing and 1/8 ply side rails just over twice the length needed (2 joiners). Carbon roving's whetted out with epoxy were laid into the mould until they were sitting proud of the top surface. The whole lot was then scraped with a metal scraper to squeeze out the excess resin. A sheet of 1/16 ply was then laid on top and weight applied (2 car batteries) When the whole mess had set (48 hours) I shaved off the plywood forms until I was left with just the carbon. A quick rub with a fine file finished the job. Simple!!!

No Iain - good old fashioned graupner steel for the wings.

Brian,

That's got to be preferable to steel joiners where you need to keep the weight down - tailplane halves, three piece wings etc.

A bit twitchy about the Graupner steel half way out in the wings on the Skylark. Ah well, may be next time.

How do you lock the tailplane on?

Hi Robbie. Someone always has to ask the awkward questions. Answer is - Dunno - I haven't worked that out as yet. Polite suggestions on a postcard - I will use any that are suitable.

You can get small versions of the Multiplex Wing Locks which work well on V-Tails. About 5mm diameter if I recall correctly.
