46% Pawnee rework in progress

Postby rossco » 17 Jun 2015, 02:05

A couple of years back I was looking for a quick fix to requiring a big tow plane fir my half scale asw 22. Enter the Bill Hemple Pawnee..at 198".

Having had many a chat with the designer I was assured my 222 would be just the ticket.... 3 months later the pawnee was flying but only with just enough power to fly the model..... it would seem parasitic drag was playing a monstrous affect on the models performance. A bigger motor would be needed. Now having decided I know where I want this one to go the 3w 275 wasn't going to cut the mustard so I've gone all out fitted the 3W 342 TS. Basically the biggest twin I can shoehorn into the cowl. So with Bill now freaking out about the airframe I bit the bullet and stripped the lot having decided that Bill was rote and that the airframe just wasn't going to survive 55% more horsepower so back to old school with 9.5mm square balsa coming too the rescue to back up the lightweight light ply structure..... things are now 100% stiffer!! So next up glass the turtle decks and bottom of the fuse for longevity and then add glass skins before fabric and paint.

Pawnee rudder covered and pink tapes applied. That's another job to strike off the list

More work .... I've now sheeted the sides in fubreglass skin and hand laid glass over the upper decks fir better stability and longevity of the model.

You will need all that extra power, to haul all the extra weight.

What next, a supercharger...

Keep up the good work, Rossco.

While you're at it, why not scale it up to 100% - engines are easy to come by at that scale!

things are moving slowly at the moment.... mainly due to a back injury and plane laziness. so over the weekend with some help from mate we cleaned out the workshop fir some room to move. . Last night I started getting ready to.mount the servo plugs to the fuselage filing out a slot to accept the plugs.
