SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Hi,

I started a thread on RCGroups, but one of the members convinced me to make one here too, so I'll copy to here what's been done so far.

Some time ago, I became interested in this glider, that is why I decided to show building process of it in 1 : 3 scale. Building style will be something new for many of you, especially design of the wings. Some things I'll try for the first time myself.

You can find some other airplanes I posted, build with this style here(probably you won't understand text , but there are pictures) http://forum.modelarji.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=66582

First I decided to make wing supporters, so that epoxy will harden enough before I would need them.
Because it is not worth to make molds for one or two models, I made things differently.
I glued drawings of wing supporters on plywood and covered everything with transparent tape, so that epoxy doesn't stick on it.
I made edges from balsa and also covered them with tape and glued everything together with few drops of instant glue.

For reduced weight, I inserted triangular piece of balsa, which will stay inside. I fill supporter alternately with fibers and roving TEX2400 then saturated it with epoxy.

I placed a piece of plexiglass on everything and weighted it down. (I used a toolbox with 20 kg of LiPo batteries )

Fuselage ribs are cut and placed on the plan.

I started gluing slats of balsa on tail. So far I always made tail separately, but here I will make it together with fuselage, so I will have enough room for servos and elevator links.

I glue slats on both sides alternately.

Few more slats glued...

All slats glued and surface evenly sanded.

Posted: 26 Jan 2017, 07:36
by skyhawk92
On the whole surface I applied a mix of epoxy and microballoons, to fill all the small gaps.
Immediately I placed 80g fiberglass and again saturate it with epoxy, then removed the excess of epoxy with small plastic plate.

I removed ribs from the first half and reused them on the second half.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 26 Jan 2017, 07:38
by skyhawk92
I sticked together both halves, to see how they fit together, and started making some ribs for wings. :)

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 26 Jan 2017, 07:38
by skyhawk92
Two halves sanded on the inside and 80g fiberglass cut in shapes. One layer over all fuselage and another just on the front part.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 26 Jan 2017, 07:39
by skyhawk92
Same as on the outside, I first fill the gaps with microballoon and then saturate fiberglass with epoxy.

Both halves aligned on edge and sticked together.

On the outside, stiched together only with a single strip of glass fibers.

Square tube, covered with few layers of carbon fiber strings and filled with a mix of epoxy and cotton fibers around nuts.

I have just been catching up with your thread. This technique is very interesting. You might like to know that it is also used in the construction of sailing yacht hulls, although I have typically seen cedar strip rather than balsa used and there and usually two or three layers laid up in different directions but that is used in a 10m structure that is going to hold 1 ton of keel! It results in a very light and strong structure.

keep up the good work!

Chris

Exactly :) that's where I got inspiration.

Main thing about the wing construction are bottom shapes of the ribs. This type of construction is fast and accurate and allows to build each control surface separately.

Bottom part shapes of the ribs(jigs or how should I call them... ) are made of 3mm plywood and on top they are covered with tape to prevent anything to stick on them later. To hold them in place, I use pieces of aluminium profiles with M3 size screws. All holes must be on same level(in height).

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 30 Jan 2017, 07:18
by skyhawk92
I build first 5 ribs of the left and right half of the wing and insert the main supporter and set the V angle.

Jigs set in place. Same are used for both halves, no need to use doubles.

Putting ribs in place. First 5 of them are made of plywood.

Two plywood plates are glued in place where the supporter will be.

Lower channel filled with carbon (roving TX 2400).
That way, wing is very flexible and very strong.

Lower part covered and aligned with front edge.
Then I glued plate to the ribs and weighted everything down.

by skyhawk92
I compress the edge brtween a 5mm balsa on top and 2,5mm below.
All pieces are covered with tape, so they don't stick together.
Because of the curvature I had to use elastics to hold it in place.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 09 Feb 2017, 07:17
by skyhawk92
I glued 2mm balsa sticks, where the ailerone will be and covered the top with a piece of plate.
When ailerons will be finished, I will fit everything together.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 10 Feb 2017, 08:27
by skyhawk92
When building aileron I first place rectangular profiles. Then I place a lath, which serves as aligner for the ribs.
I also placed bottom part of balsa cover plate.

Ribs for aileron glued.

Control handles made out of 2mm GFK plate.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 16 Feb 2017, 05:54
by skyhawk92
Control handles glued in and a lath which served as aligner removed.
In this case only, steel rod is used for the aileron because it's so thin at the end, usually I also use a bearing.

Circular edge at the front, covered with slats.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 16 Feb 2017, 05:54
by skyhawk92
Same as on wing, rear edge of the aileron thinned and covered, carbon added inside.

Sanded a half circle on the wing and covered with 50g glass fibers.
On the aileron, rounded part covered with epoxy + microballons.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Aileron sanded and other part of control handles cut.

Holes cut out, spacers inserted and aileron set in place.

On the wing side, I glued spacers.

Covers for servo and "maintenance" holes...

On a place where the cover will be I made a sketch.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 28 Feb 2017, 06:04

I made a cut 1mm wider than sketch, and a bit more on the corners.

Frame on which the cover will be fixed is made of samba wood from Africa.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

Posted: 03 Mar 2017, 06:13

On the edge of the cover I drilled some holes, a bit smaler than the screw will be. I temporarily taped it in place and drilled holes in the frame too.

Re: SZD - 36 Cobra 15 1:3 scale

I enlarged holes on the cover and screwed it in place to see how it fits. The gap that remains will be filled later, when other covers are made.

On the bottom part of the wing I cut holes for the brakes. Opening for servo is a bit larger here for easier access, because I will insert brakes at the very end.

Because rudder is quite massive, edges are a bit thicker.

At the end of the stick I put glass fiber and soaked it with epoxy, leveled it up with lathe and made thread so it can be pulled out using screw.

Elevator is used as a negative. I've put a tape on the elevator where the elevator mount is going to be, applied few layers of glass fibers and immediately a layer of microbaloon. Then I've placed the elevator mount on the elevator.

After it dried, I drilled holes for the elevator mount, roughly cut it and draw the position. On the places where screws will be I inserted small tubes and on the upper side a piece of plastic tube and glued it.

Sorry for not posting for so long, but I simply couldn't find time to post on 2 forums and also had lots of work. In the meantime plane was finished and is flying well.
