SLINGSBY GULL 3: 1:3.25 scale

Seems to be a bit of a Gull-fest going on at the moment! Having taken a shufti at Vince's excellent plan, I've decided that scaling it down and modifying to my preferred building methods would be more complicated than just starting from scratch, so that is what I'm doing. Many thanks to Vince, for letting me have the factory drawings. ;) ;)

Just like my Petrel, I'm going to build the fuselage with the half-shell method. This has the distinct advantage of being quicker due to removing the need for a jig and a load of jig supports, but suffers from the downside that you have to be a bit vigilant when it comes to keeping everything s-s-straight...

The model will be based on the replica Gull 3, purely because it has a wheel, which makes slope landing just that bit smoother...

If anyone is interested I do have some hard copy photos of the replica Gull 3 taken during the build from way back when I was doing my Gull. I didn't do the replica, it was just out of interest that I went up to see it.

I could easily scan them and make them available.

Be aware, according to Mike Beach the restorer of the original Gull and also the syndicate builders of the replica, they are not the same sailplane.

Maybe by Xmas, Mike... ;)

The biggest problem at this stage lies in the springiness of the spruce longerons, so it's essential to steam out as much of it as you can at this time...

Does that mean you are steaming a bow into it or does steaming really remove the springiness Chris?

Re: SLINGSBY GULL 3: 1:3.25 scale

Posted: 07 Oct 2017, 22:21
by chris williams
No, you need to wet up the spruce and insert it into a jet of steam whilst holding in a tad more than the required bend... In this, and most cases, the bend needs to be in two different directions...!

Meanwhile, with enough 1.5mm ply planking at the front end to hold the shape, the half shell can be removed from the board.

Regarding the interface between the 1.5mm ply and the lighter ply in the rear fuselage, how do you keep the two different thicknesses flush on the outer surface?
Thanks

Mike, it will take a good skim of filler to smooth out the planking, and it's simple to extend it over the join...
A quick word about planking with 1.5mm ply. You don't need to utilise individual planks: larger planks are cut and scored with two lines to form three planks. The wood is then bent along the score lines to form a curve that will better conform to the shape of the fuselage. The super-plank is then trimmed, cut to size, and glued in place with PVA. It's also worth pointing out that the fit of the planking does not need to be perfect, because as well as being skimmed on the outside, it will also be glassed on the inside...

Now the rear of the fuselage has been braced with 6mm balsa strip to keep it straight when the 0.8mm ply sheeting is fitted later on in the process...

Hi Chris
Any special reason for using polyester resin rather than epoxy resin? I thought (mistakenly perhaps) that polyester has to be used with Matting and Tissue and Epoxy with cloth

Re: SLINGSBY GULL 3: 1:3.25 scale

Posted: 16 Oct 2017, 22:25
by chris williams
Polyester is simpler to mix, the activator ratio being non-critical, and no measuring required: increasing amounts of hardener merely speed up the curing time... The type of glass mat or cloth used seems not to be an issue (At least, not for the last 35 years!)

Completly agree Chris, only restriction with polyester is the shrinkage . That's why , it's not used for making fuse for example

That's a nice big rudder Chris. Should have good authority. How did you make the outline of the rudder. Is it simply laminated from 3 layers of balsa sheet or does it have a laminated outline as well (if that makes sense)?

The rudder TE has a 1.5mm ply core, with 3mm balsa each side of it. The curved shape is much easier to cut out of ply than the spruce I would normally use, although I will stick with spruce for the wing TE's...

The outer wing panel spars are offset forward of the inner panel spars by 6mm. This allows them to sit in front. The glueing area is increased by the use of 6mm ply plates set in between the spars...

The sub spars form an I-beam with the existing structure and also overlap the gull join for some extra strength. To be honest, these wings are probably over-engineered, but as they say, better over the hill than under it... ;)

No, the incidence is fixed at 1.5-2 degrees positive to the tailplane, and then the wing root fairings are made up to match

Getting close the difficult bit now...fitting the wings to the fuselage. In the interests of Full Disclosure, and to avoid the sensibilities of Inspector Flewseau, the wings will not be attached to the fuselage in the same manner as the full size... ;)

Meanwhile, it's time to face off the wing roots and make up identical root facings for the fuselage... The best way (IMHO) is to make up ply blanks, cut out the joiner slot and incidence peg hole, offer up to the wing, draw around and cut out.

The first wing is set up relative to the tailplane, then the wings checked to ensure they are parallel to the tailplane. Removing part of the ply on the fuselage proved to be the simplest way to get the wing joiner box in position...

With the aperture in the fuselage closed up, the wing root fairings can be exactly aligned with the wing roots...

The TE is carefully set up at each end: the root end is defined by the wing TE, and the tip end by the jigging support

Don't feel bad about the non-response inasmuch as a fair response might start with the purchase of Supplied Air Respirator System such as this one.
