Old Gliders SZD-22 Mucha 1/4 Scale

Finally getting around to posting my build of the Old Gliders Mucha. I started in mid-December after a lengthy wait for the kit to arrive.Very nice folks to deal with, but don’t be in a hurry. It’s worth the wait, though. The parts arrive loose in a big box, with everything mixed all together. Rolled plans, with little or no section drawings, so there’s some sleuthing on the accompanying dvd to figure out how it all goes together. Certainly not for the entry-level builder, but well within the grasp of someone with some experience and ability to improvise. Here’s a shot of the full-size I chose to model, and then a few of the first framing of the fuselage.

Late December progress, more fuselage framing and empennage. The cutting of the parts is marvelous, done on a CNC router, so no laser-burn cleanup, and the notches are micrometer tolerance in how they fit together. I milled all my dimensional lumber out of cedar, figuring the strength to weight was better than spruce, and I happen to be a furnituremaker by trade, so I had good stock on hand.

Mid-January, framing wings. I chamfered the edges of my cedar spars to fit the rounded notches in the ribs, and got a really nice fit.

January still, more wing parts, aileron spars, servo layout and spoiler fitting. Lots of little ribs to make the ailerons nice and stiff.Shear webs added on either side of the spars, not yet at the root. Lots of pins!

Early February, first trial assembly. It’s huge!(biggest plane I’ve built in my 40 years of flying! Needless to say, not a lot of furniture work happening in the shop at this moment...

Mid-February, binding spar boxes, d-tube sheeting, cap strips, and a view of the bottom before sheeting.

Excellent work. I'm building the Komar 1/4scale and also have learnt to interpret polish sign language.

I built the Old Gliders quarter scale Mucha for a review in QEFI. Easy to build and flies even better. I still fly it on a regular basis.
