Capacitors for long battery leads

Hi folk,

Does anyone have a clear understanding of the type and quantity of capacitors required to extend an ESC battery lead? I have a 12s setup and the battery leads need to be around 60cm from the ESC, maximum length normally is 30cm according to YGE.

TIA, Ell.

Hi Elliot

Jeti have Adcaps that they say should be used every 20cm.

The bigger one apparently can handle 15S 300A.

Phill, that's superb! Thanks.

Hi Elliot,
Although to lengthen the leads from battery to ESC is dectromental to the ESC capasitors, the leads from the ESC to the motor are not.(within reason) So can you not bring the ESC closer to the battery and lengthen the ESC to motor leads. Ter

Terry, it's a good thought and one I had, but the EDF has it's ESC mounted directly underneath to make use of cooling airflow, as it will be well behind the c of g, I want to place the 12S pack as far forward as possible to eliminate the need for lead.

Are you sure that spacing is right?
Quote "use one AddCAP 1640 for each 20cm (8 inch) section." To me that means add a cap per 8" not at 8" intervals.
I was reading somewhere else that the capacitors should ALL be next to the ESC, maybe an electrical engineer can help clear my confusion . . . ?

Thanks in advance,
Phillip C

Phil,

This is a great thread, he knows his onions too. Apparently the caps should be as close to the ESC as possible.

incidently, Farnell have these caps at about £1.80 each :)

Rubycon (low ESR) 63v 820uf.

Although the accompanying image shows a completely different CAP... These are the ones Jeti and Schulze use.

You’re right, I didn’t read that carefully enough!

I don’t know the answer, I was a software engineer and always blamed the hardware guys if the system didn't work.

Step forward sparkies

We have to blame someone - we 'Phils' got to stick together. :D :D

Have fun,
