VGC Olympian Event at the MGC Midland Gliding Club, Long Mynd

Postby Mark Richards » 06 Dec 2015, 11:39

The Midland Glidng Club is hosting the VGC's second 'Olympian' gliding competition on the Long Mynd, from 9th to 16th July 2016.
See http://olympiangliding.com/
Venue - The Midland Gliding Club, Long Mynd, Church Stretton, SY6 6TA
On Saturday 16th July, there will be a static display of vintage scale gliders and a scale glider flying slot in the evening, using model tugs and an electric winch. Weather permitting, it may also be possible to fly the scale models from the MGC's westerly slope.
Camping is available at a site near by or on the MGC site if required.
There will be a covered area for the static display if the weather is bad.
There will be a BBQ at the MGC on the evening of Saturday 16th for all participants.
If you would like to include a model of a vintage glider in the static display or take part in the flying slot, please send a PM for details.

CHANGE OF DATE - NOW TO TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY 9th JULY 2016

The VGC have chosen to move their 'Olympian' prize giving ceremony to Saturday the 16th July.
This would clash with the proposed model flying in the evening.
For this reason, the static scale model display and model flying slot have moved to the preceding Saturday. (9th July)
This actually coincides with the Wolves MAC scale fly-in weekend, so those wishing to support both events are welcome to do so.
If you would like to drop off some models at the MGC, for the static display on Saturday and then carry on to the usual slopes for some scale/sport flying, please do.
Someone will be looking after the static display all day.
You would still be very welcome to join in with the model flying at the MGC in the evening, when full size activity has stopped.
Instead of the usual meal at the Crown Inn in Wentnor, we may choose to have the meal at the Midland Gliding Club (MGC). This has yet to be decided.
Please note, the usual Wolves MAC Scale Slope event will take place on Sunday 10th July in the normal fashion.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Regards,
Mark.

Could you please let me know if you would like to participate in the VGC Olympian event on Saturday 9th July ?
If so...
1. What models would you like to include in the Static Display?
2. If you are participating in the model flying session in the evening, what models will you be flying? (There will be aero-towing, winch launching and flying from the MGC slope if the weather is suitable)
3. Are you able to bring a tug?
4. Would you like to join us for a meal at the Midland Gliding Club in the evening? If so, how many guests?
Many thanks,
Mark

Just a note to say thank you to everyone who supported this event.
The static display was held in the new workshop of the MGC and this proved to be easily accessible and a safe environment for the models.
We had a fine selection of models including Geoff Pearce's 1/3 scale K8, Matt Walker's mighty 1/3 scale Sperber Junior,
John Minchell's 1/3 scale Ash 26, Robbie's 1/3 scale Skylark 3, Peter Dutfield's 5th Scale Komar and Airspeed Tern, John Slater's 1/4 Petrel, Ken Cutty's 1/4 scale K7, Phil Smith's 1/7th scale SF27 and my 1/4 scale Swallow and Jaskolka and 5th scale Rheinland. John Minchell also displayed an uncovered 1/3 scale PWS 101 which drew a lot of interest from visitors and members of the MGC.
Despite the inclement conditions, we managed an electric winch session with the the Swallow. It was great to see Ed, the MGC winch driver, operating our little electric winch! As expected, he did a fine job!
Several models were launched from the MGC's western slope including Ray Watts' ASW 28 and Paul Watkins' Salto.
Again, it was great to see so many spectators from the MGC watching the action in the blustery conditions.
In the evening, 19 modelers and their partners shared a lovely meal with the MGC members and Olympian Competitors.
We couldn't have been made more welcome by the MGC, and it was a pleasure to spend the day with them.
Special thanks to John Randall of the MGC, for inviting us and for making all the arrangements.
I'll stay in touch with John and hopefully we can support similar events at the MGC in the future.
