Algebra 8

Post by Peter Balcombe »

Following on from the ‘standard’ Algebra build recently completed, moulded fuselages of the old Algebra 8 (T tail, swept back wing version) are also to be re-introduced via Cliff Evans in due course.

I have designed a new built-up wing for this version, retaining the characteristic wing sweep and E193 section, but using a carbon joiner system and implementing ailerons and flaps to hopefully give a more versatile model at a similar weight to the previous RES version.

A proving build has just started, commencing with the wing structure as shown.
The wing uses hardwood spars, faced at the rear with full span 1/16” ply webbing.
A 1/4” square hardwood jigging spar and a 10mm OD carbon joiner tube stiffen up the root end.
More or less full span control surfaces will be hinged from the dummy TE once this has had an 1/8” balsa doubler added.
The photo below shows the first wing structure with all ribs on the lower spar & web strip, with the 1/4” square jigging spar slid in through the root end ribs.
The joiner tube will go just in front of the main spar at the root end, parallel to the jigging spar.
The wings will be sheeted with 1/16” balsa and then glassed as for the standard Algebra in due course.

1st wing now has carbon joiner tube installed and top sheeting attached.
Time to add the rear incidence tube and prepare servo bays prior to lower skin.

Both wings now have top skins and wing joiners in place - so its time to see what they look like on the fuselage.
Next jobs are to prepare the servo positions & hatch frames before fitting the lower skins, then leading edge, wing tips & control surfaces.

Now with wing tips, hardwood LE strips and tailplane fitted.
Fuselage servo tray and AMT bellcrank now to be fitted before the finpost & rudder is added.

Nearly ready for skinning & finishing now.
Canopy attachment to be sorted, but use as an airbrake no longer in the equation.

Good decision on the canopy airframe Peter. It was a source of frustration and annoyance on my Algebra and also a Vega TS as well as being useless as a means of hitting the landing spot.

Nearly finished now.
Rudder closed loop wires to be fitted plus radio gear & balancing, then just about ready for a maiden.

Was good to see it ‘in the flesh’ today. Hopefully get to see it flying sometime!

Spooky! Here's my effort:
I'd love to buy the new wing kit when it's available!

Well it flies!!
2 short slope flights today at Crook Peak before I called it a day as the AMT needs a bit more down elevator movement.
Used all available down trim & still needed a bit of down stick to fly level.
2nd flight included a few more circuits & showed that it should be good once the elevator trim is sorted.
Crow braking enabled a couple of half decent landings on the fairly restricted ‘Razor’ LZ.

Hopefully some flying pics from Andy Davey once he has had a chance to see what he got.
