Torcman question

Post by Elliot Howells » 06 Aug 2018, 20:02

As my plan to electrify my 6m ASH26 gathers pace, I'm drawn to the AXI glider motors as they have along shaft and extra bearing plate, so no extra engineering required. Sadly they don't have the necessary Kv to spin a 16" prop, only 22" or more. The Torcman FES system however seems to be able to launch a 1/3 scale model as mine on only 8S and 16x10, unfortunately their website is oblique at best and in german. Has anyone had any experience of Torcman - do you know what the specs are for their motors?

Thanks in advance, Ell.

this also looks good...

so good in fact, I've just ordered one, a schambeck spinner is also on it's way, I'll post some pics when I fit it (assuming anyone is interested), oh the arrogance.

Cheers, Ell.

Hi Elliot,

How much do you think the converted Ash will weigh?

Also what prop are you going to use with the Hacker?

Hi Phil, I’d expect it to be almost the same weight once electrified, I need to weigh it but around 10-12kg I’d guess. It’s very light for its size and I’ve already removed 1kg of nose weight she didn’t need!

Looks like a 14” prop will work well with this motor, there’s enough room for 16”, so a good margin.

Hi Elliot

Ecalc says ~ 1800 W with 8S and a 14 prop and to be careful of overheating.

Would be very interested in hearing how the Ash performs as Im thinking of using the same motor in my Antares.

I'll be using this spinner

https://www.klapptriebwerk.de/produkte/ ... e-spinner/

so hope to get plenty of airflow through the motor, cooling the ESC will be the challenge, some creative ducting and a vent at the rudder post I think.

50 watts/lb should be very easily achievable.

Have you watched the video I posted above? The Ash gets airborne very easily using the torcman with a 14" prop, 16" is just about feasible with my model, but my club site is a bit lumpy so the 14 is preferable.

Hi Mick,

I bought the A50-14L Glider, prolly overkill for a 10Kg glider, it's good for not far off twice that, especially vintage.

Your method of driving the prop is more critical really, have you decided how you want to do that? The torcman system is very neat and leaves the model unadulterated once the prop is removed, just not cheap.
