Paint finishes for Diatex

Post by Malcolm B »

Morning all!
I am probably being dense or accused of "man-looking" but searching high and low I cannot find the thread on the hot favourite paint types for Diatex. My current thinking is to use acrylic over the initial dope sealer coat. Ideas please!

I have been using Diatex to cover my models for years and highly recommend that you use coloured dope. Using dope will ensure a good bond to the clear dope you used to seal the weave and it will remain flexible so there is no chance of the paint cracking as the fabric moves under air and handling loads.
I get my coloured dope from Skycraft Ltd, the same place that sells the Diatex.

Thanks all
John do you know if the cellulose car paint is compatible with the dope which I believe is also cellulose based?
The choice of colour is better with cellulose paint.

Malcolm,

Diatex takes car acetone based cellulose very well on top of dope filled weave. Just control the amount of fill you apply for the desired finish.

Malcolm

Cellulose car paint is not flexible so will crack over time as the fabric moves unless you add a plasticiser to the paint. Personally, I have not had much success with additions which is why I now use dope. Skycraft Ltd can mix dope to any colour if you have the BS or RAL number.

Excellent
If they can mix to a RAL code then that is the job sorted
Thanks!

Except that they currently appear to be out of stock of both the lightweight Diatex & most of the coloured dope products!! :o
