3mm x 6mm half round wood

Post by Robcrad »

I have just started building Chris Williams 1.4.2 scheibe-loravia topaze and I am struggling to find a supplier of 4mm x 6mm half round wood, anybody know of a supplier of this?

Many thanks

I plan to build the Topaze too, and, in the absence of any suitable half round mouldings, have bought some rectangular sectioned basswood for the stringers/longerons with the intention of rounding them off before fitting. At least, that’s the theory. . .

The stuff I have used for years was made from Ramin. However, the man at the timber shop reckons it's a protected species now, which is why it seems to have disappeared... Triangular strip might do the job: it just needs to simulate the metal tube stringers of the full-size...

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply, I have just a model boating friend put me on to www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk, they can supply half round walnut in the right size, might use that.
Many thanks

You could always run a dowel through the bandsaw!

Hi all
I have sorted the half round dowel, made a small jig for my scroll saw, dowel now cut in half.
Many thanks for the suggestions and offers of help.

regards

Glad you’ve found a solution,Rob. Are you going to do a build thread for your Topaze? Hint, hint :D

I bought some 6mm x 3mm ‘almost’ half-round stripwood from B&Q. It looks and works fine on my Topaze 👍
