Where to get carbon rod?

Post by Chris Wynn »

A week or so ago, the wind conspired to allow The Plank an 'interesting arrival on the sw bowl on 'The 'Sheet', resulting in two broken carbon wing joiners. I have some 6mm rod but not enough 8mm, Neil at Spire hasn't got any that fits and Salisbury Model Centre only have much smaller sizes, sadly Endless Models closed following the death of it's owner earlier this year. Does anyone know where I might find a model shop selling 8mm carbon rod, not too far from Salisbury please, otherwise it looks like The Plank may well be grounded indefinitely.

Sorry to hear about your bump.

£12 for 75cm of 8mm diameter from Neil at Hyperflight.
I'm sure Easy Composites will stock it too. :)

I bought 1m lengths recently.
A number of mail order model suppliers stock it.
Look at Sussex Model Centre & Balsa Cabin.
I bought 1m from Sussex Model Centre for £15.99

All I would add is before you actually purchase it make sure the suppliers idea of 8mm is the same as yours - quite often it might be substantially less than the stated size so I would recommend you ask them to put a venier on it before you buy.
Anyone want a 11.8mm carbon rod that I purchased as 12mm by the way?!....

Good point Simon.
However, I bought both both 8 mm rod & 8mm ID carbon tube from Sussex Model Centre & checked before ordering that they were sliding fits - which they are.

This is one of the reasons I would prefer to visit a local shop so that I can take the fuselage with me to try it.

Just a note on carbon in general. there is so called carbon rod or strip around but it is in fact black fiberglass. This does not have near the strength of carbon.
You can check this by sanding the end a bit. If you get grey sanding dust it is glass fiber, black dust is carbon.
