WLM 1

Post by Nigel Argall »

Ok forum members, as always, I’d like to draw on your knowledge and experience.
My Grunau baby 2 is pretty much complete (see photo) so starting to think about an autumn build. I was thinking of a WLM 1 but being a bear of little brain took ages to find that Vic Steel had already done a ¼ scale model (ideal) and that it had a foam wing (even better)! Now... I have two questions:
1) The plan clearly says ‘wings have 1 .3/16” sweep forward’ and indeed – the root chord ‘rib’ is drawn this way. I have had a look at a number of ‘3 view’ drawings online and also Martin Simons book and can’t see any evidence of forward sweep – all the diagrams seem to show a dead straight leading edge across the span. I don’t want to doubt Vic but wondered where this info comes from – can anyone confirm that the glider DOES have forward sweep?
2) 2) The wing plan is a bit sketchy – that is to say it is pretty much a sketch of the basic dimensions and has almost no other info (like a cross section of construction). The original glider has ‘slotted flaps’ and ‘slotted ailerons’. I’m not quite sure what these should look like and how they should work? I know what a frise aileron is and how it combats adverse yaw – is a slotted aileron the same? Can anyone supply diagrams as I’d like to cut the wing in the appropriate manner to include this – particularly on the ailerons. The flaps I’m less bothered about. I have found a couple of pictures on the internet of the underside of the wing and clearly the flaps and ailerons have ‘gizmos’ to hold them in place and hinge them – I’m happy to replicate this with 1/16th G 10 plate but still need to know what I’m doing.
Any insights would be welcome!

Nigel,
A slotted surface has a gap between the wing and leading edge of the surface, through which air can pass in order to give a stream of air over the top of the surface when deflected.
See diagram example & photo.

Thanks so much - great info and pictures - and entertaining at the same time! Unless I unearth Vic's 'source' of leading edge sweep forward, I will go with a straight leading edge. Thanks again.
