Slope soaring models heavier than 7kg

Post by robc »

I got my BMFA magazine today along with the addendum to the 2017 BMFA handbook. I had a flick through the addendum and noticed that they’d added something about the widely publicised exemption for BMFA members to fly models lighter than 7kg above the recently imposed 400ft limit.

I was pleasantly surprised to read in the next bit that there is an additional exemption for gliders between 7kg and 14kg to fly up to 400ft above the pilot, and not the contour of the ground. I hadn’t previously seen mention of this second exemption, and is good news for those of us who slope soar larger gliders and had seen the CAA diagram showing the 400ft limit always being above the ground and not the pilot. I thought I'd mention it on here in case others were not aware either.
