2019??!! I hereby officially claim the prize for the last maiden of 2018 - my 1/4 scale Charlesworth Grunau Baby flown today at St Agnes. Huge thanks to Chris Imrie and James Clark for their help and photos. Model has actually been finished for weeks but have been waiting for the right time/weather/family/work window - you will know the feeling. Video maybe coming. Happy Christmas one and all!

Well, I am building a Keil Kraft Elmira. OK, I know its not scale, but it has a lot of personal significance for me. Like lots of people I started learning on gliders such a the trusty Veron Impala. The guy who taught me to fly was building an Elmira as per the the original kit. When he flew it, the sight of it soaring was new experience for me as it "looked" scale. I was hooked and from that time on my interest in kippers waned and I looked for scale gliders to build. (not that there were many back then)
So then, 50 years later I come accross Replikit and decide on a trip of pure nostalgia. However, with several models on the board needing completion, I decided this winter would be the appropriate time to build my Elmira.
So with that plan set in mind I came accross just such a kit on the BMFA, at a better price than the new kit, so I quickly made the purchase.
After a week of happy balsa bashing I have a nice smooth fuselage and some tail feathers. So, once the Christmas festivities are over the wing will be started. I have decided on two modificatons ( well quite a few actually). The main one is to give her ailerons. I remember quite well that when a turn was require you needed to send a telegram. It was numb on the rudder. And it had no airbarakes, so landing was a hastle. Mine will have both.
I have also dispensed with with the banded on wing and will use a peg at the front with a nylon bolt at the back of the wing. And I am making the talplane and fin removable with a single bolt at the back. This is just to make storage and transport easier and safer.
My hope is to take my old friend Eric one day next summer and give hime a go on the sticks. He doesn't fly any more because he is getting frail, but it will be a nice thing to do whilst he is still around.
Merry Christmas.
John

Impressive that it flies in a 6mph breeze, what is the wing loading Brian - I'm guessing around 15/16ozs sq. ft?

Re: Who's Building What 2019

Posted: 08 Mar 2019, 18:31

Stephen, it weighs in at 7lb 5oz which gives a loading of 16.6 lb/Ft2. At 5/6mph it was marginal and was flying at slope height. As the wind increased slightly it was climbing quite easily. By the time I ended my third flight the wind was up to 14/15mph and height was not a problem and I could race the model around in a most undignified manner. All the usual aerobatics were easily achieved.

It is powered by a 2kw Scorpion motor, battery to be 6 cell lipo 4000 Mah , and two separate 2 cell 3000mah flight systems. The motor is feed via a 100 amp ESC on a separate receiver, the motor battery and prop drive is removable for straight towing, it has a dummy ballasted nose cone for towing. A couple of months ago I was sorting out some old magazines and I came across a free plan for an F86 Sabre PSS model. I haven’t built anything like that in donkeys ages so I thought “the workbench is clear – why not”. I know it is not the usual sot of model to appear here but it is scale (ish) and it is a glider.
The construction and covering is basically complete and now for the fun painting bit!

Quick question: Do you reinforce the trailing edge rib connection at all?
Does it twist when its covered?

Oops thats two questions.

The rear of each rib is reinforced with an elongated triangle of 0.8mm ply. The 'D' section holds the wing rigid, so there is usually not distortion of the TE. (Also, I strap a ruddy great Ali straight edge to the TE when adding the top sheeting)

Also worthy of note: I've used 1.5mm ply for the TE this time, as I had run out of spruce. It will be OK, but spruce has a noticeably greater lateral strength than ply...

The colour scheme used is that of a Canadair F86 Sabre Mk4 flown by 3 Squadron RAFG based at Geilenkirchen, Germany in 1954.
I am now thoroughly looking forward to thrashing it back and forward at low level along my local slope in a good breeze.

Still loads to do but nice when you can assemble it and make it look like a glider. It's a WLM 1 - 1947 Swiss aerobatic glider. It's 1/4 scale and I'm building from the Vic Steel plan which has caused lots of problems - always frustrating but we will get there...

I had the article Vince but not the photo so as always - you come up trumps! Much appreciated. WLM cockpit is actually pretty complicated for a vintage glider - maybe as they were putting air force pilots in it they wanted it to look the part? I'll do something but it will probably be a little simplified - I like the challenge of trying to make things look detailed for a minimum effort.

Interested to see where you are going with this Chris - will it be a lightweight version like the Minimoa? I have the 1/4 scale plans and it's on my 'to-do-in-the-future' list. Assume you will be changing the wing section as well?? Will there be a build log?

Given the sprightliness of the 5th scale Wolf, I'm sticking with my favourite section. What seems to work well at the moment is a heavy fuselage and lightweight wings! I'm hoping for a big improvement on the 30 odd years old plan! ;)

Having a 3.5 scale and a 5th scale Petrel in the fleet, we felt that something was missing... So I've scaled the plan to 1/4 and Motley's giving it a go.

Had a days flying in a 28 a lot of years ago as P2 - the take-off and landing runs were like being in a biscuit tin as a consequence of its all metal construction - nice to fly though.

Terry Holland has decided to hang up his scalpel and retire from building models.

Over the years Terry has built many unusual models and not being a flyer himself, has sold them on to the community. His last model is a build from my plan, but reduced in scale, of the Karakan, which he has donated to the Gliding Heritage Centre at Lasham as a display model. I have enjoyed helping Terry over the years with information for his models and I will be sad to see his departure and wish him all the best for the future.

Thanks Terry for being a good friend

It's a shame not to see it flying...

Sorry to hear that Terry won't be building any more of his fine models. He usually brought them to MW for test flying, so here's a sample of his work from over the years...

Dale Nichols from Oz, reports a successful maiden flight for his Spatz...

Hello Chris,

you beat me to the posting of pictures from the successful maiden on the weekend at our annual Cobram Aerotow on the Melbourne Cup Weekend.

The Spatz flew beautifully straight off the tow with just minor trim. Handling is very benign and the model sits just right in the air.
Built as per the plan in all respects, a relatively easy build and great flying performance.
The finish is Koverall on the fuselage with two pack creme finish, wings are Oracover fabric, blue trim is from a rattle can.

thanks for the great design, it won't be my last from your plans.

Dale

The maiden flight of the 1/5 scale Dart 17 has happened rather sooner than I had expected. This morning dawned bright and sunny with the promise of a breeze from the East. I was up on my favourite East facing slope by 9.30 and the wind was 6mph to max 9mph straight on the slope.
The Dart flew straight out with just a touch of down trim. In total I had four short flights during which I increased the aileron differential to 70% and rudder/aileron mix to 30% . The stall brings with it a wing tip drop but it is very predictable and safe and the landings are very easy with the big brakes.
It will take a couple more trimming sessions before I have the model flying exactly as I want but it is not too far away.
I have attached three photos including two in the air. I apologise for the poor quality as they were taken with my phone while I was trying to fly the model.
Brian. :) :) :) :) :)

Nicely done Brian. What is the shade of Yellow? SNP??

Halfords Ford Signal Yellow, which is close to what I used on my 1:3.5 version. I couldn't find a suitable politically inspired colour scheme!
Brian. :D

There you go Brian, HQ does it again :)
Presumably the tailplane gives enough pitch authority, despite your earlier concerns.

Peter, the tail appears to be ok. I will know more when I finish the trimming process.
Robbie and Barry, the workshop was given a deep clean, workbench resurfaced, tools rearranged and the rubbish bin emptied. The next project is already started and coming along nicely.
Brian :) :) :)
