Hi all
I have had to scarf joint the spars of a wing and have a quick question, What is the best position for the joint, nearer the tip or nearer the root of the wing? I was planning to put the joints nearer the tip as I was thinking less stress on them, but now I am not so sure, any ideas gratefully received.
Regards
Rob

Re: main spar scarf joint
Rob , the stress on a spar is an exponential curve with the greatest stress at the root , by the time you get to quarter span ,the stress is about half the stress at the root .and tapering away towards the tip
To answer your question the splice will be better made near to the wing tip.
