Rise of the Eagle?

Post by FrankS »

Not exactly a build thread but a re-build thread, for those who were at the last Middle Wallop may remember my ex- CW Slingsby Eagle was involved in a mid-air at around 900ft agl which took off the port wing tip and aileron, sort of got it under control, but at around 400-500ft the remaining part of the port wing panel came away, and it didn't end too well.

So get it home and have a look at the damage, looks like a new (or extensive rebuild) port wing, some repairs to the starboard wing and center section and a fuselage rebuild and it could fly again. Stripping the covering off the fuselage, looks like the tail section, center section and nose (should save a few church roofs) can be reused........

First off splice some new longerons into the tail boom and then replace the bracing.

Build a new nose section, splice on and add the old nose cone

As a friend and clubmate who was at Middle Wallop and helped retrieve the pieces of the Eagle after the mid-air, I can confirm it was as bad as the first photo depicts!!
I can only think that Frank's determination, love of a challenge, but more importantly, his Northern frugality, has driven the rebuild!😂😂

Nice one Frank, I am with Chris on this one and would have ALMOST binned it and had a nice excuse to buy parts for another.

a brief up progress update, first off the fuselage, new side sheeting added, canopy frames to be repaired and rubbed down ready for repainting and trail fitting before fuselage is covered, filled and painted.

Going to go with this colour scheme

Port wing wasn't too bad, cracked upper spar and sheeting
Port Wing 2.jpg

Repaired and braced the spar, cutout the damaged sheeting and replaced

Starboard wing (the one severed in the mid air) required a bit more drastic action, so has been rebuilt from the sheeted area as shown in progress here
