why offset?

Post by harry curzon »

Some folding prop hubs have the prop mount offset forwards in the direction of rotation. Why?
It seems to me that it has the effect of making the blade like a swept wing which reduces the thrust, and is only of use in reducing transonic drag. Is that its purpose, to delay the onset of the shock near the tips of large diameter props?

Hi Harry

I think the offset is to allow the prop blades to fold more closely to the glider fuselage.
