Hi guys,
Motley was heard to say I don't know whether to make it a high or low winger.

Chris replied I would bung-a-low wing on it. :!:    Ter.

Just to get something smaller on the bench for a change, I am well on with a new PT 1/5 scale Dart.
However, this one has fully sheeted built-up wings which plug in to a short fixed centre wing section to make assembly much easier. After talking to Mr Teakle, the fin area has been increased & the tail feathers/rudder are film covered built-up construction to reduce the overall flying weight.

I'm deep into my first Scale glider build for ages, and my first from plans (unless the motorised T61 counts). It's a Fauvel AV36 and the summary build thread thread is here:
http://scalesoaring.co.uk/phpBB3/viewto ... hilit=AV36

More details on my website here:
http://www.bartonhewsons.uk/home/modelf ... diary.html

As of today, all that stands between me and the covering iron are the last two tricky bits - the canopy and undercarriage!

Trying to decide on which of 3 models to do
PWS 101 half built from Old Gliders Poland - but there is a lot of work still.
Ka6e not started yet from S2G kit.
Or a CW Bergefalke which needs covering and colour scheme.
Only got enough time to do one this year.

Ah yes Roo I'm sure you're right.

But I am drawing up and building a half scale Corby Starlet, two peanut and one open indoor scale models and three for local power club flying, plus the usual repairs to other models.
Oh, and organizing the BMFA indoor scale RC and Free Flight Nationals in March and April too.
That's why there is only time for one scale glider this year.

Will you let me off now? 8-)

With the Grumman Albatross project moving towards completion my thoughts have turned to the next project and I have settled on a Lippisch Storch V, a lightweight motor glider flying wing.
I am now on the look out for any info and documentation about the aircraft. Vince of course has been first class in turning up some info and I have also got some info from the guys on the Retroplane site but could really do with photos of the model, especially any showing detail and of course anything showing the construction.
Hoping someone out there can help.

Ah yes Frank. Good intentions and all that. I got the ASK 13 plan about that long ago along with the canopy, and was quite excited about flying it as I love swept forward wings. Maybe if and when I retire

Frank,
Just to whet your appetite, this is my 1/5 scale Fauvette from the Mike Trew plan, although I changed the wing section to HQ and fitted micro servos in each V tail half rather than use the pushrod method on the plan. Aileron & Brake servos also fitted in each wing, rather than fuselage.
Turned out to be reasonable flier.

Hi Roo,
Happy to talk ASW27s all day, They have been a big part of my life one way or another. I have reams of info and pic's that you can have for the asking. Still my favorite flying model
I also have canopies and frames incorporating the consul module if you do not wish to make them from scratch this time.

When flight testing the prototypes and before kitting we found that to get it to perform how we wished there needed to be a few modifications and deviations made from true scale, again happy to make these available to you.
Cant wait to see what you do with it.

Kind Regards Terry.

After two false starts, the Nyborg project is finally going to happen and a set of ribs has been ordered from Cliff.
At 1/3 scale it will span only 3.5m, although it looks more like a 1/3 fuselage married to a set of 1/5 high aspect ratio wings.

I've received a lot of helpful and sensible advice on this project, from various folk, which I much appreciate - even though I've rejected it all !
Quite rightly it has tactfully been pointed out that the very thick and flat bottom wing section is not something one would pick for an efficient soarer. The full span warping ailerons that give progressively more deflection at the tip, might well add to the control problems created by the very short moment arm and truly enormous elevator.

However this model is part of an ongoing 40 year research project to record the life and gliders of the late Mr Nyborg (1872-1962).
After building gliders in 1903. 1905, 1909, by accident or design, Mr Nyborg evolved the concept of the high aspect ratio, high wing loading, high speed led-sled as early as 1919. He is mainly remembered for his contravertial gliders of the mid-late 1930's but most flights were low hops and none of them were ever soared. Ralph Slazenger was the only person to aerotow one but its performance was never quantified - so it remains an enigma.

The glides was VERY fast for its day, with a lethally twitchy elevator but a slow roll rate due to the solid ash mainspars !
Oddly, a number of famous poilots flew it on many occasions as they evidently believed it has potential but My Nyborg, although highly intelligent, was a stubborn character, unwilling to make modifications. One aerodynamicist considered the fuselage a drag inducing disaster but thought it was achieving a glide angle of 1/25 from just 10.5m span - which he could not explain as it should be much less.

So rather than building a 'practical ' near scale soarer, I aim to build an accurate replica, warts and all, to see what I can learn from it.
Be careful what you wish for

Attached some pictures of my ASW15B built. My own design
Even so some of the glass ARF gliders available are of very good quality and durability I do not like the price
Scale is 1:3.125 or 4.8m wing span due to my tranport limit of maximum 2.4m long wings. ( I do not like split wings unless the prototype has them )
This design is somewhat traditional balsa, ply and spruce built. The cost of the built is about 30% of an identical glass ARF and also less weight
The fuselage is standard ply formers and spruce stringers. Skinned with 3 mm balsa strips then sanded smooth.remaining skin is approximate 2.5mm
Total fuse surface was then glassed with 80gr/m2 glass cloth and resin.
The blue color on the pictures is spray putty. An afternoons sanding will get rid of most of this putty excluding in little dents and scratches.
Then a primer and final white coat will be added with an other sanding job in between.
Retract is a Fema with 4" wheel
The wing are a semi foam core design sheeted with 0.4 mm plywood but that is a story for an other time.

For those interested you can get plans and parts from Cliff Evans.

Well I do not know if Santa came a bit late or a lot early, but a big box appeared in my garage the other evening.
Inside was one F&W ASW 17 with a ceflix 750 up and go DF unit.
6.3 Metres of carbon perfection. I have honestly never owned a better quality model. I have run out of superlatives.
I am lying if I claimed that I was going to "build" this. Throw in some servos and a bit of glue, shake well and it will be done. :D

New 3m Pat Teakle Dart15 just finished & awaiting maiden flight.
This one has built-up wings (1/16" balsa sheeted & glassed) and uses a fixed central section with plug-on wings using the HQ35 section to avoid need to build in physical washout.
The tail feathers are also of built-up construction in an effort to reduce nose ballast and overall weight.
The fin & rudder height has been increased from the original size as recommended by Pat.
Overall weight with 2cell LiFe battery is 5lb 10oz.

Hi Oliver

Now that you have flown your model do you have any further thoughts on the amount of washout on the wings as I still feel that 9.5 deg is more than required and must contribute to an inferior glide as not all of the wing is working.

Your comments would be appreciated but either way it is a beautiful model.

I have just started my latest new project, an aerobatic glider this time. The Akaflieg München Mü28 is a research glider aircraft that was designed and built in Germany in 1983. Only one example of the design was built. The prototype was 12.00 metre span, fully flapped, had a symmetrical section and was very aerobatic. It was very successful in glider aerobatic competition over many years and with a number of different pilots.
It has been on my build list for quite some time now and has the added benefit of not being a Fox/Swift/Salto/Pilatus. My model will be to ¼ scale. It will have a fixed, semi recessed main wheel, rather than a retract as most of it’s flights will be from the slope over heather and rocks. I have started on the fuselage which will be formed from glass cloth over a blue foam mould, ala Roo Hawkins.
Brian. :)

Thanks Vince, cockpit photos are always useful. Having said that, the fact that the seat is stained brown is rather concerning in this case!
Barry, my apologies must go to all Fox pilots, and there are so very, very, very many of them. Let's face it, every man and their dog has a Fox. In fact the nextdoor neighbours Labrador flies a Fox, and very nice it is too. I prefer to build and fly something a bit more uncommon.

I was doing a build log a while back but gave up due to life getting in the way. I can resurrect it if any one is interested.
Many thanks must go to Chris Williams for his work reposting his build log of this very pretty glider. And thanks to Avetek for cutting all those ribs with such accuracy.
The canopy was pulled by Neil Moss here in Auckland after the debarcle with Traplet left me short changed and no part.
I have balanced with a static margin of 7% In front of the neutral point.
All up weight is 8kg.

The maiden went well on what has to be said what was the best day we have had for a very long time.
There was a fair amount of thrust required to get the Petrel moving on the skid but as soon as it did move it leapt into the air and sat easily behind the Greenley.
I did have to add a few click of down trim but all in all it was a good first flight.

Well done, Stu...Once you have spent a little time tweaking the controls & getting her to circle nicely, you should have some nice flying ahead...

BTW BC knows all about skid friction. :D :D :D

Yes, It is known as the death of the Mk 1 Piper Cub.

The full size has much the same problem, at 1 min 50 sec.

Hi all

Took delivery of a lovely FW Models 1:4.5 ASW17 from Phil H at MW.

Fits together very nicely and has a Migflight Jetec 80 installed.

Might need some advice on fitting the all moving tail plane!

Thanks, Cliff & Chris, it's 1: 3.5, the Jim Owen plan reduced. Also, thought all Dave C's friends would like to know that he flew last week, first time for 2 yrs.

William,
Another great model. Good to hear about Dave. Tell him we are all thinking of him, as wish him all the best. Hope to see him over here next year, maybe.

John Greenwood from Oz sent me these pics of his recently completed electrified 3rd scale Topaze. Amazingly, it flies ROG...!

Very nice! It’s interesting how the amount of fuselage in shot changes during the flight. I’m sure it’s giving a lot of information about how the wing flexes under load (and in response to the ailerons?) but I can’t quite work it out.

I wonder whether I should try that on my AV36 - or maybe it would be a bit too alarming?!

Geoff, I like your nice tidy workshop, will it stay like that or will it look like all of our workshops after a year. Ter.

I was going to say that the workshop had the B.S. seal of approval. Award that man the golden brush and pan. There is also a level of envy over the amount of space available.
Brian. :)

It only looks like a lot of space, but you have to take into account the camera lens and the size of the subject.

Happy new year Criss and Geoff
