Rodel ka6e

I was given this glider from a member of ssuk after it crashed at Buckminster on Sunday. Well time for repair. I was surprised that there is no sparoom so I have fixed the wings joiner and reinforced with glass and epoxy then refixed the veneer with epoxy. I am adding
adding a 6mm ply web 3/4 along the wings.

Well done Roo, it's looking good, I saw it in the car park when taking the remains of my glider back to the car. Looking forward to seeing it in the air when you finish repairing it.

Fast work Roo! I love how you just crack on with it - no messing about. And with the Rodel Ka6 you can be sure to be rewarded with a really well-mannered, versatile model. Pity Rodel aren't making models any more.

If you need a spare canopy, Sarik supply one for Jilles' Ka6 which should cut down fine.

Thanks roger I was wondering about the canopy. There is still a lot of work to do on this glider so not sure when it will be done. I need to get some more epoxy so its on hold for the moment. What did you cover your ka6e in????. ROO

Hey Roo,

Covered the wings and tail in Profilm, but only because I haven't got round to trying vinyl.

Cliff - the Rodel is 1:3.55 (that well known scale! :? ). I know this makes it smaller than Jilles' 1:3.125 Ka6e but I'm sure his canopy would cut down fine.

My fave model. I'm off flying it off our field after lunch.

Looks fab!

I find it really rewarding bringing back models from the dead. It's good for the planet and my wallet too. :geek:

ARUP wrote: 09 Jun 2019, 23:23 I responded on your other thread before seeing this one. Nice repair being done I might add! I have this kit NIB. If I flew it sedately, i.e., no high speed passes or aerobatics, is the wing stout enough as is or is a 'spar letting' session needed? Thank you for your response in advance.
Just to chip in here as I fly this model A LOT. :D

I think the wings are a beautiful balance of strength and lightness. They have a thick section which lends them natural strength, then glasscloth and epoxy-bonded skins with just the right amount of flex. Tight loops and rolls are no problem and I've outside looped it (on purpose) and done very sharp high-speed pull-outs (not on purpose).... and the wings just soaked it up.

There's a few videos off the slope (skip to 1:32 if you want to see a few aeros):

So it's pretty much my perfect model, and the only plane that if I wrote it off today I'd buy another tomorrow (although no easy thing as they're not made any more  )

Hope this helps.

The joiner in my kit was a 20mm steel tube that weighed a ton (slight exaggeration). I switched it out for an aluminium tube which I filled with carbon, saving over 1lb in weight.

Thanks roger. I have decided to make the canopy myself two days bad weather only 1 hour to make plug and 1/2 to pull canopy today.

Looks like your almost there, can't keep up with you,KA6e, Ash31 and the Grob. some work load. Out of interest what did you make the canopy plug out off, to make it hard enough to pull the canopy over it?

It's some blue foam with 3 layers of glass. I did not vacuum form it but pulled it over by hand.

Roo

Hoping to get my S2G 4.2m Ka6e finished for a maiden that weekend too.
Still got a couple of servos to install and cover the wings and position all the graphics.
A week of evenings should see it done though.
