The idea is for a safer, longer lasting pack with better discharge characteristics.
Any thoughts?

Think you'd be better off using the 54v dewalt packs, at £150 slightly less eye watering
A123's can still explode though, I believe our Dutch correspondent had one go in his big K13?

I'd think there are deals about, but £450 will get you 54v 9000mah, so you're paying another £400 plus for the convenience of a the pack and balance connector. Dewalt batteries would need the cases partially removing and sockets made/ adapted, but still...
I’ve also found some videos on how to create your own packs, including putting fuses between cells and a bus bar.

This video seems to cover the DEWALT Flexxpack producing 18v or 54v which you might f8nd interesting if going down the route of using those packs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAmghq7XadQ

Fellas, if I were to make my own packs, I'd probably weld them using a capacitor welder (DIY).
Must have a go one of these days, especially now HK are no longer viable in the UK
