Post by Rob Holgate »

Has anyone bought models from Composite RC. Models in Germany please? I know Uk vat has to be paid but wondering what customs/ handling charges would be added too. Thanks.

I had a model from CARF in Germany and as well as VAT there was a £13 "Processing Fee" on which VAT was also charged. Not a huge amount of money, but one of the "benefits" of Brexit. The bill from FedEx for the VAT etc, arrived 3 months after the model was delivered.

I send kits out to EU countries all the time, RC models are Tariff free. Which works both ways. What you pay extra for is the admin fee for the courier.

as an aside, I had to pay tax on a second hand radio from the Irish Republic.

Nearly £200... Brexit benefit...

Yes, but you should have brought it tax free so it levels itself out !!!!

I'm afraid you've lost me there John, I was working on the basis that domestic second hand goods are never subject to VAT unless sold by a trader who is VAT registered. This was a private seller...

One issue I am encountering is buying from smaller businesses in the EU who arent yet at the local VAT threshold . I end up paying UK vat when none was chargeable in the first place.

If anyone has managed to find a way to correct this, Im all ears!

Unfortunately, vatVAT has to be paid. I am not vat registered because I am nowhere near the threshold. I have to pay vat on all of the wood I buy but cannot claim it back or build that cost into a kit. There are a lot of small businesses that suffer because of the vat they have to pay out that they cannot claim back I personally think that the small business should be exempt from paying vat on goods that they rely on for their business. Doing that, in the long run, would help them grow to the point where they may have to register.
