Hi Folks,

Well the Old Gliders Petrel is moving on now and I have query regarding the triangular shaped wing rib caps that fit against the wing sheeting...

Do they go on the top and bottom of the ribs or just the top please?

I have a scale drawing, loads of photos and searched the internet, but I can not find the answer.

Ken, they were usually top and bottom on wooden vintage gliders. They acted as additional reinforcement for the ribs as in most full size, the ribs usually didn't go through the mainspar - they were butted up to it front and rear, the spars being fully pre built first.

The triangular gussets were usually scarf jointed into the leading edge sheeting but sometimes were part of the leading edge sheeting itself.

Attached is a pdf document showing some of the construction techniques for these vintage machines - a leading edge scarf preparation for one of these gussets is shown on page 16 and 48 (pdf page 16 and 48, that is).
